Personporträtt - Marina Povitkina, violin

Marina Povitkina, violin

I started playing when I was 7 years old. I remember I was at school when during the break between the classes a music teacher from a neighbourhood music school came to visit our class, 'advertising" music school for us. I remember she and her student played a very soft, slow but a very emotional duet on the violin and it sounded amazing and really touching. I had never heard live music before and the sound of violin struck me with its gentleness and beauty. I came home, told my parents about the experience at school that day and they thought it might be time for me to try out the music school. Then it started.

Music has never been my primary occupation, more of a hobby all along my studies and work. At the moment I am a PhD student in Political Science at University of Gothenburg

First of all, music, especially classical music, is a different world for me. I think sometimes it feels, especially with the most powerful pieces ,that it can carry you away from the rush and everyday life. Once you get used to listening to every note in the piece, you follow the melody and the thoughts that the author had when writing the piece. It is almost like reading a book, you are transferred to the world where there is only you and the melody.
Playing Requiem's Mozart together with a choir has been an unforgettable experience. It was actually very hard to play since you get shivers up and down your spine constantly as the powerful music goes. It really gets to you. I would certainly want to repeat the experience. I would also like to play Beethoven's 7th Symphony, 2d movement and Piazzola's and Vivaldi's four seasons with a string orchestra some time.

In my free time I run a sustainability project at my neighbourhood which promotes sharing. It is a tool library in a student community and anyone can borrow tools instead of buying them for their own. It is especially helpful for international students, who only come for a short period of time and cannot afford buying expensive tools (and then throwing them away when they live). Since consumption is reaching unacceptable scales and puts pressure on the environment, I truly believe that sharing and reuse is the future to aim for.
